Warriors attempt to finish off Mavs in Game 6
Basketball Betting Lines
05/03/2007 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Dallas Mavericks attempt to force a Game 7 in their
first-round series with the Golden State Warriors, as the teams square off
tonight at ORACLE ARENA.
The Warriors lead this best-of-seven series 3-2. If necessary, Game 7 is
scheduled for Saturday at American Airlines Center.
Only two eighth-seeded teams have ever defeated a one seed in the first round
of the playoffs. Denver eliminated the Seattle SuperSonics, 3-2, in the first
round of the 1994 playoffs, while the Knicks knocked out the Miami Heat in
five, 3-2, during the opening round of the 1999 postseason. No eight seed has
ever defeated a one seed in a best-of-seven series.
Golden State has not won a playoff series since 1991 when it eliminated the
San Antonio Spurs, 3-1, in the opening round of the postseason. The last time
the Mavericks lost in the first round of the playoffs was in 2004, when they
were ousted in five games, 4-1, by the Sacramento Kings.
On Tuesday, Dirk Nowitzki came up big when it counted, draining two threes and
the go-ahead free throws during the late-game surge, as the Mavericks scored
the final 15 points of the game and staved off elimination with a 118-112
victory over Golden State at American Airlines Center.
Nowitzki made 14-of-15 from the foul line and ended with 30 points and 12
rebounds in the victory. Josh Howard scored 23 points and grabbed eight
rebounds, while Devin Harris added 16 points and seven assists. Veteran Jerry
Stackhouse came off the bench and netted 15 for Dallas.
Baron Davis finished with 27 points and nine assists for the Warriors before
fouling out with 21 seconds left. Jason Richardson totaled 23 points and seven
rebounds, while Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson scored 16 points apiece in
defeat.
The Mavericks have lost five straight road games in the postseason, and have
dropped seven of their last eight Game 6s.
The last time Golden State played in a sixth game of a playoff series was on
May 1, 1977, as the Warriors defeated the Lakers, 115-106, on their homecourt
in Game 6 of the Western Conference semifinals. The Lakers defeated Golden
State, 97-84, in Game 7 of that series.
The Warriors are 9-3, including the postseason, against the Mavericks dating
back to December 30, 2005.
Dallas lost in six games to the Miami Heat in the championship round last
year. The Mavericks reached the 60-win mark for the third time in
franchise history during the 2006-07 regular season, as they won a
franchise-best 67 games.
Golden State, which had the longest playoff drought in the NBA, has returned
to the postseason for the first time since 1994, when it was led by Chris
Mullin, Latrell Sprewell and Chris Webber. The Warriors were swept, 3-0, by
the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the playoffs.

MySportsbook.com and Kentucky Derby Offer Bonuses
The 2008 Kentucky Derby has announced a $1-million bonus for this weekend’s 134th ‘Run for the Roses’ and MySportsbook.com is doing the same.
Well, not quite $1 million, but MySportsbook.com is offering a 75% rebate for Kentucky Derby lines. Check out the exclusive horse racing bonus for all the details.
According to MySportsbook.com, the favorites for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky are: Curlin (+250); Street Sense (+500); Scat Daddy (+700); Circular Quay (+750); and Nobiz Like Shobiz (+800).
Derby organizers announced this week that there will be a $1-million bonus at the 2007 Kentucky Derby odds if the first-place horse wins by more than 6 1/2 lengths – the margin of Barbaro's victory last year. The bonus would be divided Saturday among the winning trainer, jockey, owner and a charity, with each receiving 25 percent. The designated charity is the Barbaro Memorial Fund.
''It's certainly creative, it's certainly fun and it has something for the horsemen, which we always want to embrace,'' Churchill Downs president and chief executive Robert Evans said at a news conference. ''What's really cool is it will force us to remember Barbaro.''
Meanwhile, the Derby favorite – Curlin – is going against the odds this year. It's been 125 years since Apollo won after skipping his 2-year-old season, and not since Regret in 1915 has such a lightly seasoned horse worn the blanket of red roses.
Arkansas Derby winner Curlin – unbeaten in three career races – tries to overcome both those obstacles in Saturday's 133rd Derby.
''We're not running against history,'' trainer Steve Asmussen said Monday. ''We're running against who they load up.''
Six other horses have run in the Derby without benefit of 2-year-old races and with three or fewer starts. The best any of them managed was a sixth-place finish by Showing Up last year.
Asmussen dismissed suggestions that Curlin's lack of racing experience could keep him from the winner's circle.
”He exudes confidence and he's got a great presence about him,'' the trainer said. ''I feel great about the position we're in. He's not worried about anything, why should you be?''
The Kentucky Derby is at 4:04 p.m., ET Saturday.
