(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Seattle Mariners will open an eight-game road trip
tonight with a stop at Fenway Park for a showdown with the Boston Red Sox in a
makeup game for an April 12 rainout.
Seattle enters the short series on a three-game winning streak, including a
two-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox. In Wednesday's 3-2 victory over
Chicago at Safeco Field, Yuniesky Betancourt clubbed the go-ahead home run in
the seventh inning to lead the way.
Jose Guillen also homered for the Mariners, who have won seven of their last
eight games. Starter Miguel Batista allowed two runs on five hits with a
strikeout in 7 1/3 innings for the victory.
The Mariners, who are a game behind the LA Angels of Anaheim for the top spot
in the AL West division, will also visit the Yankees for four games before
closing out the trek with three contests at Detroit.
The Mariners will send Horacio Ramirez to the mound on Thursday. Ramirez is in
his first season with Seattle after spending the first four years of his
career in an Atlanta uniform.
Ramirez is 2-1 with a 4.41 ERA in three starts this season, and won his last
outing on April 27 against Kansas City. He allowed just one run and seven hits
over 6 1/3 innings.
The left-hander has never faced Boston in his career.
Japanese phenom Daisuke Matsuzaka will toe the rubber in Thursday's makeup
game against the Mariners. Matsuzaka owns a 3-2 mark with a 4.36 ERA in five
starts this season, and has won back-to-back starts following a personal two-
game slide.
In his last outing on April 27 against the rival New York Yankees, Matsuzaka
was victorious with six innings of four-run, five-hit ball.
Matsuzaka faced Seattle on April 11 at Fenway Park, but was saddled with the
loss after yielding three runs and eight hits over seven innings. He will seek
revenge in this matchup today in Beantown.
Boston has won five of seven and will close out a short three-game homestand
this evening versus the Mariners. The Red Sox recorded a 6-4 victory over
Oakland on Wednesday, as Julio Lugo and Alex Cora each drove in two runs in
the finale of a brief two-game set.
David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez had two hits apiece for the AL East-leading Red
Sox, who are 4 1/2 games ahead of Toronto in the division. J.D. Drew knocked
in a run and Coco Crisp scored twice in a winning cause.
Red Sox starter Josh Beckett yielded six hits and three runs over seven
innings to become the first six-game winner in the majors. He struck out
seven and walked two, while retiring the first 12 batters he faced. Mike
Timlin gave up a run in the ninth but held on for his first save of 2007.
After Thursday's game versus Seattle, the Red Sox will begin a six-game road
trip at Minnesota and Toronto.
The 2007 series between Seattle and Boston is tied at a game apiece. The
Mariners went 6-4 in last year's series, including a 1-3 mark in Beantown.
The Mariners are 1-1 at Fenway Park this season.
