Red Sox stun Orioles with six-run ninth

Boston, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jason Varitek had two runs batted in as Boston
scored all six of its runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to come from
behind to down Baltimore, 6-5, in the finale of a three-game set at Fenway
Park.
Ahead 5-0, Jeremy Guthrie was pitching a gem for Baltimore and went into the
ninth inning looking for his first career complete game. After recording the
first out of the frame, Coco Crisp reached base after Ramon Hernandez dropped
an easy pop up in the infield. What seemed like a small mistake at the time
turned out to be the start of a meltdown for the O's.
Guthrie was then relieved by Danys Baez, who gave up a double to David Ortiz
as Boston got on the board and made it 5-1. Wily Mo Pena followed with a
single and Orioles closer Chris Ray was then summoned from the bullpen.
J.D. Drew worked a walk off Ray to load the bases while Kevin Youkilis was
also issued a free pass to score Ortiz and make it 5-2. Jason Varitek then
roped a double to right as two more came home to make it a one-run game. Eric
Hinske was then intentionally walked to load the bases and the move paid off
as Alex Cora hit a grounder to second and Brian Roberts got the out at home.
Boston's rally was then completed as Julio Lugo hit a slow roller between
first and second and Kevin Millar fielded the grounder and made the toss to
Ray covering at first. Ray though couldn't handle Millar's throw and the ball
got away as Hinske and Varitek hustled home to give the Red Sox the stunning
victory.
J.C. Romero (1-0) was credited with the victory after pitching 1 1/3 scoreless
innings of relief for Boston, which took two of three from Baltimore.
Josh Beckett, who was attempting to become the major league's first eight-game
winner, started for Boston and gave up two runs on two hits before leaving
after four innings with a torn flap of skin on his right middle finger. The
right-hander also struck out seven and walked two.
Beckett was also looking to join the great Babe Ruth as one of four Red Sox
pitchers to win their first eight starts of a season.
Baltimore wasted a brilliant performance by Guthrie, who started in place of
the injured Jaret Wright, and allowed an unearned run on three hits in 8 1/3
strong innings.
Ray (3-3) suffered the blown save as well as the loss for the Orioles, who
have dropped two straight after a four-game winning streak.
Baltimore scored two runs in the first to take an early lead. Roberts walked
to lead off the game and Nick Markakis followed with a base hit. Miguel Tejada
then struck out and Roberts stole third and scored to make it 1-0 as Varitek's
throw sailed into the outfield. Later in the frame, Aubrey Huff's single
scored Markakis to make it 2-0.
Baltimore added a run in the fifth to up its lead to 3-0. Kyle Snyder started
the inning for Boston and was greeted by Jay Payton, who doubled to left.
Payton then advanced to third as Snyder's pickoff attempt was low and dribbled
into the outfield. Corey Patterson followed with a ground out as Payton
crossed the plate.
Tejada's RBI single in the seventh gave the Orioles a four-run lead.
Baltimore went up 5-0 in the eighth after Jay Gibbons poked a single to right
that scored Huff, who walked to lead off the frame and moved to second on
Millar's base hit.

Boston has won five of its last six games against the Orioles...Manny Ramirez
went hitless in three at-bats for Boston as his 11-game hitting streak came to
an end...Roberts went 1-for-2 and extended his hitting streak to 12 games for
the Orioles. He also walked three times and scored twice...Prior to the game,
Baltimore activated pitcher Scott Williamson from the disabled list while
pitcher Jon Leicester was placed on the 15-day DL after the right-hander left
Saturday's game after suffering a posterior deltoid strain to his right
shoulder.
