Rapids hand Red Bulls first loss

Soccer Betting Lines

05/14/2007 - East Rutherford, NJ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Red Bull New Yorks second designated player signing, Juan Pablo Angel, made his Major League Soccer regular debut Sunday afternoon against the Colorado Rapids at Giants Stadium with little fanfare - 7,802 were in attendance on Mother's Day.

Maybe just as important for the Red Bulls, however, was the fact the teams first designated player signing - Claudio Reyna - and another one of their bigger offseason acquisitions - goalkeeper Ronald Waterrues - missed the game with injuries. Waterrues sprained his left ankle in a 3-3 tie at Real Salt Lake last weekend while Reyna injured his groin in training on Saturday.

The impact of those two players absences, especially Reynas, probably outweighed the impact of Angels presence in a 1-0 loss to the Rapids, New Yorks first loss of the season.

"I think it was a big loss for us," Angel said of missing Reyna. "It was a bit unfortunate for him because he just pulled out yesterday and he is a big influence for us, he is a big character, he is the captain. But we've got to be able to play without him, without any other player, and do well."

"It was bad performance on our part," New York coach Bruce Arena said. "You lose players in games, Its not an excuse, we were very poor. I think we got outplayed in the first half just in terms of the effort aspect of the game. In the second half, I thought our performance on the technical side was horrible. Poor crossing, poor finishing, poor passing, which was the case for 90 minutes of the game. Obviously we missed some of the players that were out, but most games you don't have a complete lineup so there are no excuses our part. I thought it was a poor performance."

Colorado moved into first place in the Western Conference with 11 points. It got a goal from Nicolas "Nico" Hernandez in the 24th minute, which was all the offense it would need.

"The good thing about this is we played well and got a victory on the road," Colorado coach Fernando Clavijo said. "We played good defense for 90 minutes. We had a game plan that we executed with no mistakes. We scored when we had a chance and then we closed it down."

On the goal, Kyle Beckerman intercepted the ball in the midfield and played a long ball to Herculez Gomez on the left wing. Gomez raced down the sideline, cut inside and found Nico with a square pass from about six yards out that he made no mistake on. It was Nicos first goal of the season.

"I am excited because the team won, I admit it feels good to finally score a goal though as well," Nico said through translator and teammate Roberto Brown.

Hernandez had seven goals and six assists last season for Colorado, his first in MLS.

"That is always a plus (for Nico to get a goal) but if it wasn't for him it could have been Hercules (Gomez), Terry Cook, Roberto Brown, Kyle Beckerman or somebody else," Clavijo said. "Thats what it is, we have a lot of guys who can score goals. You can't just concentrate on shutting down one guy. We have a team that works together to win games."

Colorado goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul - a Dakar, Senegal native who grew up in the Bronx - took a lot of pleasure out of his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career.

"There are so many more to come," Coundoul said of the cleansheet. "It is a great feeling to come to New York were you grew up and have a shutout with a lot of friends and family here watching me. It means a lot for me."

It also means a little extra on Mother's Day with his family in attendance.

"To me every day is Mother's Day, not only one day but it is great to give her this present," Coundoul said. "Every time I go on the field I talk to both my mom and dad and they say, 'Go ahead, we are right behind you.' Everyday for me is Mother's Day and Father's Day, to me."

Coundoul, who made seven saves in the game, faced a couple early chances, thwarting New York in the seventh minute by collecting the ball in front on an on-rushing Angel, and doing the same about 10 minutes later. On the second chance, Coundoul came out of the box to clear a ball and completely whiffed, but collided with Angel, giving his defense a chance to clear.

"The defense was excellent, I don't have a ton of experience but all the guys in front of me have tons of experience which makes me look like I have some experience, too," Coundoul quipped.

Colorado had its first chance about 20 minutes in when forward Jovan Kirovski crossed into the box to Gomez, but Waterrues's replacement, Jon Conway, made the save for New York.

He wasn't so lucky on Colorados next chance, which he had to dig out of the net.

After a mainly lackluster first half, New York came to life a little to start the second half. Dema Kovalenko controlled the ball in the offensive third for Red Bull before passing into the box to Dave van den Bergh, who served as captain in Reynas absence. Van den Bergh then passed to Angel in the box, but his resulting shot was cleared off the line by Rapids defender Dan Gargan.

"Not only the goalie has to make a save," Coundoul said. "Sometimes the defense has to make a save. He covered me on that one, the next time I cover him."

That is exactly what happened a little over 10 minutes later.

Red Bulls midfielder Clint Mathis broke down the left sideline, pulled up and squared a pass off past a sprawling Gargan, but Coundoul got into position in time to save Dane Richards shot.

"Certainly we got it together a little bit better in the second half," Arena said. "We had those opportunities in the early part of the second half to even the game up and make it more challenging for Colorado, but we weren't able to even the game up and get the goal back and put them under pressure."

New York (3-1-2) will try to snap its two-game winless streak Saturday when it hosts Columbus while Colorado (3-2-2) will look for more of the same, also on Saturday, against Kansas City.

MySportsbook.com: NBA Championship Odds

With the playoffs about two months away, the top two teams in the Western Conference are the clear cut leaders to win the NBA Championship. The Dallas Mavericks have the best record in the NBA (44-9) and have been absolutely scorching since the second week of the season.  What makes the Mavs’ record more impressive is the fact that they dropped their first four games of the season.  Currently they have won 17 out of their last 18 and are MySportsbook.com’s favorite (2-1) to win it all.  Right behind the Mavs are the Pacific leading Phoenix Suns (39-13).  Last season, the Suns lost in the Conference Finals to non-other then the Mavericks four games to two.  Of course the Suns were without center Amare Stoudemire who has is averaging 19.9 PPG and 9.5 RPG since coming back from his knee injury.  Unlike the Mavs, the Suns have struggled a bit lately having lost their last three and four out of their last seven.  Of course the main reason for their three straight loses is due to the absence of two time MVP Steve Nash, who is out with a shoulder injury.  Heads-up, the Mavs have beaten the Suns in both of their meetings this season.

In the Eastern Conference, the Pistons (32-19) are the favorites to win it all at 6-1. The addition of Chris Webber seems to have been a good move for the Pistons.  Since coming over from the 76ers, Webber has averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG and the Pistons are 11-4.  Even though the defending champion Heat are currently on the playoff making cusp, they are the Eastern Conference team that is getting the most action to win it all (9-1).  The fact that Shaquille O’Neal is back in the starting lineup after missing 39 games probably has something to do with this.  No doubt, Shaq makes a difference when in the lineup as their winning six out of their last seven would indicate.

Just because it is the All-Star break doesn’t mean that you can’t bet on NBA hoops this weekend.  Be sure to log onto MySportsbook.com to bet on who you think will cut down the nets this July. Matt Kenseth And Kevin Harvick Favorites To Take NASCAR Nextel Cup Championship

(September 15)—The NASCAR season has hit the homestretch with the opening event on this year’s Chase for the Cup taking place this weekend at the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway. With 10 races remaining to determine the Cup Series champion, leading online sportsbook MySportsbook.com today announced odds on all 10 Chase qualifying drivers capturing the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship.

One of the largest sportsbook sites on the Internet, MySportsbook.com currently lists the top two drivers in the point standings as the early favorites to win the Nextel Cup. Entering the Chase for the Cup with a slim five-point lead in the point standings, 2003 NASCAR champ Matt Kenseth has been made a slight favorite to win his second Cup at 7/2 betting odds. 2001 Cup Rookie of the Year Kevin Harvick has betting odds listed at 5/2 and four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon is listed at 6/1 to capture the Nextel Cup this year.

Hoping to follow in the footsteps of his legendary father who won six NASCAR titles, Dale Earnhardt Jr. stands at 8/1 to breakthrough with his first Cup victory. Staying with the family theme, MySportsbook.com lists 2005 Rookie of the Year Kyle Busch at 14/1 to succeed big brother Kurt’s 2004 NASCAR title. While Kasey Kahne was the final driver to qualify for the Chase with a third place finish last week, the oddsmakers give him a fighting chance at 10/1 mainly due to several mile-and-a-half tracks remaining on the schedule. Despite going winless on the NASCAR circuit this season, Jeff Burton enters the Chase at 5/1 to capture the Cup title. Meanwhile, rookie Denny Hamlin is 4/1 to win the championship, while veteran driver Mark Martin enters the Chase for the Cup as a 15/1 long shot to win his first NASCAR title in his 24th and final season.

MySportsbook.com will offer comprehensive Nascar betting lines on every race remaining on the Nextel Cup series including driver match-ups, props and odds to win each race. For a complete list of NASCAR odds, please visit www.MySportsbook.com.
