Lewis hits for cycle as Giants rough up Rockies

05/14/2007 -
Denver, CO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Fred Lewis was 5-for-6 with four RBI and three
runs scored as the Giants pounded the Rockies, 15-2, in the last of four games
between the clubs at Coors Field.
Lewis hit for the cycle, becoming the 22nd player in Giants franchise history
and ninth in the San Francisco era to accomplish the feat. Randy Winn was the
last player to do so, on August 15, 2005 at Cincinnati.
After hitting a homer, a double, and a triple, Lewis stepped up in the seventh
needing only a single to complete the cycle, and received some unlikely
encouragement.
"The fans behind me were saying 'you need a single,' so I thought about
it just a little, but then I tried to wash it out of my mind when I went to
the plate," said Lewis, who then greeted Rockies reliever Denny Bautista with
a base hit.
Kevin Frandsen collected a career-high four hits, knocked in three runs and
scored twice for the Giants, who won for the third time in their last eight
games and earned a split in the series. Omar Vizquel collected three hits and
scored a pair of runs, Eliezer Alfonzo tied a career-high with three hits, Dan
Ortmeier had two hits, two RBI and scored twice, and Mark Sweeney also scored
twice for San Francisco, which pounded out a season-high 22 hits.
Matt Cain (2-3) scattered five hits and one run over six innings, fanning six
and walking three. He aided his cause by going 1-for-3 at the plate with an
RBI and a run scored.
Yorvit Torrealba was 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Rockies, who have
dropped four of six. Chris Iannetta had an RBI single, while Omar Quintanilla
singled and scored the other run for Colorado, which allowed the most runs by
an opponent this season.
Taylor Buchholz (1-2) was rocked to the tune of 12 hits and eight runs in 4
2/3 innings. Bautista also had a rough outing in relief, dented for six
runs and seven hits in only one-third of an inning.
"I thought I made some good pitches, really," said Buchholz about his start.
"I thought my fastball was decent, and was pretty happy with my curveball,
too."
The Giants picked up a run in the first as Lewis doubled to start the game,
went to third on Vizquel's bunt single, and scored when Buchholz balked.
Four more crossed the plate in the fourth. Ortmeier and Frandsen hit one-out
singles, and after Cain fanned, Lewis ripped a three-run shot to left. Vizquel
followed with a single, and Pedro Feliz doubled to drive him home for a 5-0
Giants lead.
Frandsen's triple in the fifth knocked in Sweeney and it was 6-0. Cain
followed with an RBI single, then Lewis tripled in Cain for an 8-0 margin.
The Rockies finally responded in the bottom of the inning as Willy Taveras
doubled home Quintanilla, but the Giants took a 9-1 lead when Frandsen's
bases-loaded walk plated Sweeney.
In the seventh, six more runs came across as San Francisco built a 15-1
advantage. A Feliz RBI double put the Giants into double-digits, and Ryan
Klesko's single scored a pair. Ortmeier's double scored two more runs and then
Frandsen knocked home Ortmeier.
"These guys can play," said Cain about the subs who starred in the contest.
"They're here because they're supposed to be here. All the guys that were in
here today did a great job."
Iannetta's two-out RBI single in the ninth capped the scoring.
