Forsberg noncommittal about his future with the Flyers

VOORHEES, N.J. (AP) -All Peter Forsberg has to do is tell the Philadelphia Flyers that he wants to re-sign with them or ask to be dealt to a contender before the Feb. 27 trade deadline.

So far, at least publicly, Forsberg has kept that decision to himself.

The NHL-worst Flyers are stuck in limbo, waiting for an answer from the former MVP who's been slowed this season by his chronically troubled right foot. Now he's simply dragging his feet.

Forsberg declined to comment Monday about the specifics of the meeting he had a day earlier with Flyers chairman Ed Snider, and refused to say if he asked to be traded.

``It's not like I wanted to leave. It's not like I wanted out of here,'' Forsberg said. ``I like it here. It's not been my intention to leave, no.''

Forsberg will be a free agent at the end of this season and has said all along he didn't want to address his future until he solved the lingering issues with his right foot. Forsberg has visited with doctors around the globe to find out why his foot hasn't felt right in his skate, the health issue mostly responsible for keeping him out 16 games this season.

I've said I wanted to stay and I wanted to get my foot fixed and then I'll think about my future,'' he said. ``That's all I've said all along. I didn't know because my foot didn't feel good enough and I didn't know how long I was going to play.''

But since Forsberg returned from an All-Star break trip to visit a specialist in Sweden, he's playing like his old self. He has two goals and eight assists in eight games since the break and 38 points in 39 games overall this season, showing his foot may at last be stable while heating up interest from around the league with the deadline near.

``I hope Peter's going to stay here and I hope he's not going to go somewhere else,'' said winger Simon Gagne. ``I imagine we'll know before the trade deadline. He's very quiet about it, and I understand that.''

Forsberg said his foot and ankle are improved, but won't say he's all the way back.

``I wish I knew right now. I wish I knew five months ago it was going to be OK,'' he said. ``I think I need to play a little more to know it's going to be 100 percent.''

Forsberg is playing out the final months of a two-year, $11.5 million contract, and while he had long maintained his first priority was to re-sign with the Flyers, contenders are actively asking the organization about his availability.

He knows the longer his decision drags out, the more it will be a distraction for the team. Each day a new trade rumor pops up, leading to the same old questions about his future.

``I've been going everywhere for the last three weeks,'' he said. ``I have no problem staying here. I like it here. We'll see what happens.''
