Cruz's ninth-inning blast lifts Rangers over Angels

05/14/2007 - Arlington, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Nelson Cruz belted a solo home run with one out in the ninth inning to give the Texas Rangers a 7-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the third contest of a three-games series.

Cruz hit his first homer of the season into the seats in right-center field off Scot Shields (0-2) as the Rangers won for just the second time in six games.

Ian Kinsler, Hank Blalock and Brad Wilkerson also homered for the Rangers, who beat the Angels for just the first time in six tries this season.

Texas starter Mike Wood went four innings, allowing five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits, while walking one and striking out three. Eric Gagne (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth for his first win since June 10, 2005, as a member of the Dodgers.

Gary Matthews Jr. homered twice, connecting from both sides of the plate. Shea Hillenbrand and Mike Napoli hit back-to-back homers for the Angels, who had their four-game winning streak snapped.

Angels' starter Ervin Santana yielded six runs -- five earned -- on eight hits. He struck out five and walked none.

Matthews' two-run homer to right in the first gave the Angels to a 2-0 lead But Kinsler's two-run homer into the seats in left and an RBI double to right center by Teixeira gave the Rangers a 3-2 lead in the third.

Hillenbrand and Napoli hit their back-to-back home runs with one-out in the fourth putting the Angels ahead 4-3. Blalock answered with a homer of his own during the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 4-4.

The Angels took a 6-4 edge in the fifth. Vladimir Guerrero reached first on Michael Young's throwing error. C.J. Wilson then entered in relief and surrendered a two-run homer to center by Matthews.

Wilkerson's two-run homer over the center field fence in the sixth tied it at 6-6.

Rangers reliever Joaquin Benoit escaped in the seventh from a bases-loaded, no-out jam by retiring the next three batters on two popups and a groundout.

Game Notes

Teixeira extended his hitting streak to 11 games... Teixeira passed Alex Rodriguez's Rangers record by playing in his 483rd straight game. He has the second-longest active streak in the major leagues behind Baltimore's Miguel Tejada, who played in his 1,118th straight game Sunday...Angels reliever Hector Carrasco and manager Mike Scioscia were ejected in the seventh by plate umpire Alfonso Marquez after Carrasco beaned Kinsler with a pitch.
