(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Milwaukee Brewers go for their fifth straight win and
continue a 10-game homestand when they play the first of four consecutive
meetings with the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight at Miller Park.
It has been quite a start to the season for the Brewers, who own the best
record in the majors at 18-9 and lead the NL Central by five games over the
Cincinnati Reds.
The club is also coming off a three-game sweep of the defending World Series
champion St. Louis Cardinals, including a 4-0 shutout in the series finale on
Wednesday.
Prince Fielder singled in two runs and J.J. Hardy went 1-for-3 with a run
scored to extend his career-best hitting streak to 13 games for the Brewers.
Milwaukee starter Chris Capuano left the game early after getting hit on the
right knee by a comebacker that caused a contusion. Capuano had two outs in
the second inning when Aaron Miles laced a sharp grounder that found the
outside of his knee before rolling toward Fielder, who recorded the out at
first.
After limping to the dugout, Capuano returned for a scoreless third, but got
lifted for pinch- hitter Tony Gwynn Jr. in the home half and replaced on the
mound by Carlos Villanueva (2-0), who shut out St. Louis over the next four
innings.
Dave Bush takes the hill tonight for the Brewers after getting hit around in
his last start. Bush was tagged for eight runs -- seven earned -- on 10 hits
in 5 1/3 innings Saturday at Houston, tying his career highs for both runs and
hits allowed. The loss dropped the right-hander to 2-2 with a 6.23 ERA on the
year.
Bush is 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA in three career appearances, including two starts,
against the Pirates, with all three outings coming last season.
Left-hander Tom Gorzelanny aims to bounce back from his first loss of the
season for Pittsburgh tonight. Gorzelanny posted wins in three of his first
four starts, the other a no decision, before being charged for five runs on
eight hits in a loss to Cincinnati last Monday.
Gorzelanny, who has a 3.06 earned run average on the season, has faced the
Brewers twice, including once as a starter. He has yet to post a decision
while pitching to a 1.17 ERA.
It was a busy yet unsuccessful day for Pittsburgh yesterday. The club first
had to complete a delayed game that was suspended due to heavy rains in the
bottom of the seventh inning on Tuesday. The Pirates resumed that game
Wednesday afternoon trailing 6-5, and were unable to mount a comeback before
dropping the contest, 8-6.
Pittsburgh was unable to get anything going in the second game, either, as the
squad was dazzled by Cubs starter Jason Marquis for eight innings en route to
a 7-1 setback in the series finale.
Ryan Doumit was 1-for-3 with a solo home run for the Pirates, who have lost
four of their past five contests. Jason Bay was 2-for-4 and Freddy Sanchez was
1-for-4 for Pittsburgh.
Ian Snell (2-2) surrendered four runs on four hits in five innings of work to
pick up the loss.
The Brewers swept a short two-game set over their division rivals in mid-
April and won four of six at Miller Park against the Pirates last season. That
includes a three-game home sweep in April of 2006.
