Boggan's triple ends 3-OT thriller
NCAA Basketball Betting Lines
01/17/2007 -
Stillwater, OK (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Mario Boggan did a freshman one better in
a conference thriller, draining a contested three-pointer with 3.2 seconds
left to end 55 minutes of Big 12 basketball in 12th-ranked Oklahoma State's
105-103 victory over No. 21 Texas from Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The final three-plus seconds included a walk and an in-bound formality,
capping a game featuring clutch shooting, massive momentum swings and Cowboys
head coach Sean Sutton almost fainting at the end of regulation.
If he only knew 15 more minutes were in store.
Kevin Durant, who tied a career-high with 37 points, collected an air ball and
scored off the glass while being fouled with 10.5 ticks remaining in the third
overtime. He drained the foul shot to push Texas in front, 103-102.
The Cowboys eventually got the ball to Boggan at the top of the left wing
with two Longhorns surrounding him. He shook the first defender then double-
clutched his shot to avoid the outstretched arms of the second player.
Just 5-of-33 from beyond the arc entering the game, Boggan's three trumped
Durant's conventional three-point possession, handing the Longhorns (13-4, 3-1
Big 12) their first conference loss.
Boggan's shot capped a 37-point, 20-rebound performance, continuing his
stellar senior season. He entered the contest averaging a team-leading 21
points and 7.1 rebounds per game and shooting just over 60 percent from the
floor.
JamesOn Curry totaled 28 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while Terrel
Harris scored 16 points and Byron Eaton added 11 points for the Cowboys (16-2,
2-1), who improved to 11-0 on Eddie Sutton court.
D.J. Augustin contributed 19 points, nine assists and seven rebounds and
Justin Mason totaled 18 points for Texas. Damion James collected 10 points and
11 rebounds, while Durant added 12 boards in the loss.
Augustin's three-pointer with 21 seconds left in regulation sent the game to
overtime -- the first of three extra sessions.
The guard made the pivotal shot again in the waning stages of the first
overtime, converting a layup to square the contest at 83-83 with 13 seconds on
the clock.
David Monds' heave from the right corner didn't draw iron, and an offensive
putback occurred about one second after the horn.
The Cowboys seized a 91-88 edge in the second overtime on Boggan's mid-range
jumper, but Durant -- who made 4-of-12 threes on the contest -- connected from
near the top of the circle to tie the game.
Tyler Hatch -- a walk-on surrounded on the floor by a group of high school
All-Americans -- attempted to stamp a feel-good story on the contest by making
a reverse layup to put the Cowboys up 93-91 with 43 seconds left.
It was for naught, as Durant answered with a dunk to tie the game again,
eventually forcing the third extra session.
Curry started it with a three-pointer then Harris buried two free throws to
open a 98-93 advantage.
However, as proven much earlier in the night, no lead was safe.
Durant made 1-of-2 free throws then Mason drilled a contested three from the
right wing to draw the Longhorns within one.
After a Boggan jumper, Connor Atchley raced down a loose ball and connected
from long distance to make the score 100-100 with 1:55 on the clock.
Curry then made a pair of free throws before the frantic finish.
The Cowboys led 38-36 at the half.
Game Notes

changes...Neither team lead by more than seven points...Oklahoma State shot

SPORTS BETTING - Tennis is an underrated and under-utilized bettors' sport.
Ten years ago, at just about this time, I called Alan Boston in Vegas and left him a voicemail that went something like this (abridged version): "Hey Alan, Chad Millman from ESPN The Magazine calling. I want to do a book about wise guys, you in?"
A couple weeks later I got a message back (abridged version): "I don't know, maybe," Boston said. "Call me and we'll talk about it. But not later today. I got $1,000 on Andre Agassi to win the French Open at 40-1, and he's in the finals."
Here's what happened next (abridged version): Agassi won his tourney. Boston won his $40,000. I wrote sportsbook.
In the ten years since, how much has been wagered on the big-time tennis events? Put it this way: The Nevada Gaming Commission doesn't even track the number year by year because it's so small.
"Tennis makes up about one-tenth of one percent of our take," says Lucky's bookmaking boss Jimmy Vaccaro. "The last big golf major we probably had $100,000 worth of bets. In tennis, we might have written two big tickets."
Tennis' lack of popularity amongst the American bettoratti is no surprise, really. For starters, the biggest sports betting holidays -- the Super Bowl, the NCAA tourney -- are must see TV. People, at least the degenerates I know, plan vacations around watching those events in Vegas sports books.
But Wimbledon? Doesn't exactly reel in the whales. "Seriously, it's the nuts as an event," says Boston. "But who even knows when it's on?"
Here's another reason that helps explain why golf gets traction, something I call "The Bubbe Theory." My Bubbe is pushing 95 and has cataracts so bad that, to her, even the most crystalline Chicago day is mostly cloudy. But she still listens to the Cubs games, and she still calls me in a fit if she disagrees with something Rick Telander writes in the Chicago Sun Times. She's a sports fan. If she doesn't know you, you're just filling a niche. And niche players, even historically good ones like Roger and Raf, don't drive betting volume. Only the highest profile names attract square money, which inflates wagering totals like a shot of saline to the lips. Bubbe, and the public, loved Agassi, tennis' last cross-the-rubicon, mainstream draw. She also has a crush on Tiger. She's given me standing orders to put a sawbuck on the big cat whenever I walk through a sports book (or mistakenly tap into one via my Internet machine.) That explains why the Masters is getting $100K in action at some books while the four tennis majors might not get that combined this year.
This isn't a case of tennis being a difficult sport to bet. In fact, in Europe, it's probably the second most popular sport for gambling after soccer. Granted, as the WSJ football betting last week and The Mag's Shaun Assael examined in even greater depth last year, that might be because gamblers across the pond see it as an easy game to fix. But it could also be because, over there it holds the kind of sway the big two do over here.
Street corners in Spain are peppered with public courts and kids doing their best Raffy impressions. In some war torn parts of Eastern Europe poverty-stricken kids view tennis as an escape route, like football or basketball here. A couple years ago The Mag's Lindsay Berra wrote a great piece about Belgrade's Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic and Novak Djokovic. They learned the game as kids while bombs were raining down on their homeland. They practiced in drained swimming pools. Not exactly Nick Bolletierri conditions.
In the United States, casual fans think tennis is played four times a year. But on the tightly packed European continent, national interest in homegrown talent runs deep every weekend. Of the ATP's current top 20 players, only two, tennis betting and James Blake, are American. Fourteen are from Europe, representing six different countries.
No wonder fans from Lisbon to Bhudapest get jacked up for the net game, whether it's Wimbledon or a low-level tourney like the Estoril Open in Portugal (congrats to Spain's Albert Montanes for winning that one, btw). Chances are good that someone representing their flag will not only be playing, but have a shot at winning.
And that's all any bettor can ask for.
