Bay leads Sox in comeback win over O's

Baseball Betting Lines

04/17/2009 - Boston, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jason Bay hit a two-run homer and the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, as the Boston Red Sox battled back from an early seven-run deficit to upend the Baltimore Orioles, 10-8, in the opener of a four-game set amongst AL East foes.

J.D. Drew hit a solo blast and scored three runs, while Nick Green went 2- for-4 with two RBI for the Red Sox, who were coming off a disappointing 2-4 road trip.

Brad Penny had a forgettable Fenway Park debut with his new team, giving up all eight runs on six hits and five walks in three-plus innings. Relievers Manny Delcarmen, Javier Lopez, Ramon Ramirez, Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon combined to allow just five hits and a walk in six shutout innings, with Ramirez (1-0) getting the win and Papelbon notching his third save.

Jeremy Guthrie, who entered with a 2.25 earned-run average in two starts this season, was roughed up for eight runs -- five earned -- on eight hits and four walks in 4 2/3 frames for Baltimore, which was coming off a 19-6 loss to Texas. Danys Baez (0-1) allowed the game-winning run to take the loss.

Nick Markakis powered the offense with a grand slam and an RBI double, while Brian Roberts and Adam Jones each had two hits and an RBI in the setback.

After knotting things in the fifth, the Sox loaded the bases with one out an inning later, taking the lead on Bay's sac fly and going up 10-8 on Mike Lowell's RBI single to center.

The Orioles threatened with two on and one out in the eighth, but Okajima came in from the bullpen and got Markakis to fly out to center and Aubrey Huff to chase strike three to keep it a two-run game.

In the ninth, Papelbon allowed a leadoff single to Ty Wigginton, but induced consecutive pop outs before striking out pinch-hitter Felix Pie to end the three-hour, 34-minute offensive showcase.

The Orioles spotted Guthrie a 7-0 lead in the second. Penny loaded the bases and walked Ryan Freel to force in a run. After getting Cesar Izturis to line into the inning's first out, Roberts stroked an RBI single to left, and Penny walked Jones and grooved a curveball into the wheelhouse of Markakis, whose slam landed in the second row of Fenway's center field seats.

The Sox began their comeback with a four-run bottom half, as Bay's two-run homer over the short porch in right got things started. Jacoby Ellsbury had an RBI single, and David Ortiz hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded later on.

Drew brought the hosts within two runs on his third homer of the season to lead off the third, though Markakis' run-scoring double got the tally back an inning later.

Boston loaded the bases with a two-out rally in the fifth. After Drew tripled, and Bay and Lowell were issued free passes, Jason Varitek hit a dribbler to first that ate up Huff, allowing Drew to score. Nick Green then plated Bay and Lowell on a shot off the center field wall, chasing Guthrie from the 8-8 affair.

Game Notes

Matt Kenseth And Kevin Harvick Favorites To Take NASCAR Nextel Cup Championship

(September 15)—The NASCAR season has hit the homestretch with the opening event on this year’s Chase for the Cup taking place this weekend at the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway. With 10 races remaining to determine the Cup Series champion, leading online sportsbook MySportsbook.com today announced odds on all 10 Chase qualifying drivers capturing the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship.

One of the largest sportsbook sites on the Internet, MySportsbook.com currently lists the top two drivers in the point standings as the early favorites to win the Nextel Cup. Entering the Chase for the Cup with a slim five-point lead in the point standings, 2003 NASCAR champ Matt Kenseth has been made a slight favorite to win his second Cup at 7/2 betting odds. 2001 Cup Rookie of the Year Kevin Harvick has betting odds listed at 5/2 and four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon is listed at 6/1 to capture the Nextel Cup this year.

Hoping to follow in the footsteps of his legendary father who won six NASCAR titles, Dale Earnhardt Jr. stands at 8/1 to breakthrough with his first Cup victory. Staying with the family theme, MySportsbook.com lists 2005 Rookie of the Year Kyle Busch at 14/1 to succeed big brother Kurt’s 2004 NASCAR title. While Kasey Kahne was the final driver to qualify for the Chase with a third place finish last week, the oddsmakers give him a fighting chance at 10/1 mainly due to several mile-and-a-half tracks remaining on the schedule. Despite going winless on the NASCAR circuit this season, Jeff Burton enters the Chase at 5/1 to capture the Cup title. Meanwhile, rookie Denny Hamlin is 4/1 to win the championship, while veteran driver Mark Martin enters the Chase for the Cup as a 15/1 long shot to win his first NASCAR title in his 24th and final season.

MySportsbook.com will offer comprehensive Nascar betting lines on every race remaining on the Nextel Cup series including driver match-ups, props and odds to win each race. For a complete list of NASCAR odds, please visit www.MySportsbook.com.
