(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Kansas City Royals turn to ace Gil Meche in hopes of
earning a rare series split with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim when the
two clubs conclude a four-game set this afternoon at Kauffman Stadium.
The Angels had won six consecutive games in Kansas City and were 13-2 in their
last 15 outings as the visitor in this series prior to Wednesday's 3-1 defeat
to the Royals. All three Kansas City runs came via Esteban German's homer off
Ervin Santana in the bottom of the seventh inning.
German's blast provided all the offensive support Jorge De La Rosa (3-2) would
need. The Royals starter allowed just one run on five hits and a walk over
seven innings. Joakim Soria pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save in
four chances to help Kansas City snap a three-game losing streak.
Santana (2-4) went 6 1/3 innings and was charged with three runs on 11 hits.
He walked one and struck out six for the Angels, who had won four in a row and
10 of 12 coming in.
Reggie Willits accounted for half of Anaheim's six hits, finishing 3-for-4 on
the evening.
Wednesday's victory was only the fourth for the Royals in their last 19
meetings with the Angels. They'll try for two in a row today behind Meche, who
so far has proven worthy of the five-year, $55-million contract he signed with
Kansas City during the offseason.
The ex-Seattle Mariner went 2-1 with an impressive 2.18 earned run average
over the season's first month and has produced four straight quality starts.
In his most recent trip to the hill, Meche defeated his former team by
allowing three unearned runs over six innings in the Royals' 8-3 win at
Seattle last Saturday.
Meche owns a 5-2 record with a 5.38 ERA over 15 career starts against the
Angels and posted two wins and a no decision in three matchups with Los
Angeles last season, despite registering a 5.87 ERA over those games.
The 28-year-old will face off against Angels phenom Jered Weaver, who earned
his first victory of 2007 on Saturday after a pair of losing starts to begin
his campaign.
Weaver shut out the Chicago White Sox over 5 2/3 innings in his most recent
outing, which was easily the 24-year-old's most impressive performance since
coming off the disabled list in mid-April. He scattered six hits and struck
out five without issuing a walk.
Five days earlier, Weaver was roughed up for seven runs (five earned) and
seven hits over just 1 2/3 frames in a home loss to Detroit.
The former first-round draft pick was brilliant in two starts against Kansas
City last season. Weaver limited the Royals to one unearned run and five hits
over seven innings to pick up a victory last June, and also defeated the club
in Kauffman Stadium in July with 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball.
On the injury front, Angels third baseman Macier Izturis, who has missed all
three games of this series with a hamstring strain, was placed on the 15-day
disabled list on Thursday. Los Angeles is also expected to again be without
left fielder Garret Anderson, who has not played since Friday because of an
injured hip.
